Weekly Update & Miscellaneous Meanderings
Opps I forgot my post last week! I have been busy visiting with my in-laws and it totally slipped my mind. They flew in from Nova Scotia for a visit for a few weeks. They are leaving very soon and we are sad to see them go.Speaking of my in-laws my Father in-law showed me how to peel wood yesterday. He grew up in Nova Scotia in his parents lumber camp so he knows a thing or two about wood. Then he went on to explain how it all ties into the paper industry. (hmmm the startings of scrapbooking?). The sawmill that his father owened is cicra 1946 and has some additional parts from the turn of the century. (the 1900's that is.)
So how did the wood peeling thing start up? We have (or shall I say HAD) a spruce tree, a big one, that was sadly too close to the house and it had to be removed. (Even though I protested!) After my hubby and my Father in-law(FIL) laid it on the front lawn my FIL proceeded to show the kids and I how to peel wood. So of course I had to try it out! (Can you say sticky! Do not try this without gloves you are planning on throwing away! :) )
Apparently when wood is peeled the pulp mills used to pay more for the wood as they could skip the de-barking process. Peeling exposes the lignin that is main ingredient paper (and the stuff they remove for us scrapbookers!). I was amazed at how easy it was to strip the bark and how sticky the remaining wood was! Here are some pictures for your enjoyment!
Here is the sawmill that was used in the Maritimes by my Huband's Grandfather. My FIL has it running today!
Scrapbooking with Preschoolers at Home:
How I get stuff done in my scrapbooks with three preschoolers at home. As Bob the Builder would say... "Can we do it? YES we can!"
My tip this week: Stickers... have old stickers you aren't going to use, my kids have a sticker book and they love to put the stickers in and out of the book!

Funny of the week at my house:
My eldest twin was up to his usual antics this week. Granny was busy doing some baking and the little turkey said "that's not how mom does it!". Two days later both boys decided to tell mom that's not how Granny does it! :)
P.S. We would love to hear from you please leave a comment! :)
