Since today is Earth Day I thought I would focus my blog on going green with your scrapbooking. There are many ways to be environmentally friendly when it comes to scrapbooking. And not just scrapbooking, but organizing as well. I personally have used items in my craft room that are not being used as they were intended. I have used a CD tower for stamps and kitchen canisters to organize flowers and ribbons. These items were destined for our garage sale, but I came up with great ways to reuse them. Since we live in Sherwood Park and are participating in the GREAT recycling program out here, I have set up three "garbage" cans in my room. But in fact, they aren't actually garbage cans at all! I cut the top off of three large Tide boxes and placed blue recycle bags in two of the boxes. One is for paper, one for plastic and the last one is for actual garbage. It's amazing how much packaginging you can recycle in one week! And speaking of recycling packaging... I have a cute project to show you. At a recent retailers event I made a cute mini album using the packaginging from the Making Memories Flower Patch Brad Combo Pack. It's so cute! The other items on the album are from the Making Memories Flower Patch Line, which is perfect for all those great spring and Easter pictures you have. Check out the Making Memories website to see all the cute products from the Flower Patch line www.makingmemories.com and click on Products By Collection. We have a great selection of these products, so come in soon!
Here a few more hints for greener scrapbooking.
1. RECYCLE all your paper scraps. I have a BULGING file folder for all my paper scraps. I have one for cardstock and one for patterned paper. I recycle any pieces that are smaller than 3" and sort the rest. The paper scraps are great for all sorts of projects. They work great in the Cricut. My children also know that they can go into these two files for any papers they want for their projects. It's great for school projects!
2. Consider bringing home your garbage from crops so that you can recycle it at home. I came up with this idea from my children's school. Each day they are sent home with their lunch garbage so that it can be recycled at home. The staff has already been commenting on how much less garbage the school now has to throw out!
3. REUSE. As I mention above, I have reused a CD tower and canisters in my craft room. Garage sale season is just around the corner, so you are sure to get great deals.
4. DONATE excess items. Lets face it, most of us who are addicted to scrapbooking are also addicted to scrapbook shopping. We often buy items because they are cute, but without a purpose. Then we get it home, and find that we don't have a use for it. Instead of throwing it out, consider donating it. Schools and Hospitals welcome these types of donations! You can bring in your donations to the store and we will bring them to the Stollery Hospital for you.
Have fun coming up with your own GREEN scrapbooking ideas!
Have a GREEN Wednesday!
